Introduction.

Touring Europe by car is one of the richest ways to experience the Continent, yet budgeting for a road trip can feel like guesswork.

This guide breaks the task into clear cost headings, explains the factors behind each, and provides a free calculator to bring everything together in seconds.

How to use our European Road Trip Cost Calculator.

Our calculator is designed to be user-friendly, simplifying the decision-making process. For instance, you don't need to know the exact fuel cost - a rough estimate is sufficient. This approach is designed to make your planning experience more straightforward and less daunting.

The calculator is structured in a way that lists your significant costs, such as accommodation and food, first, followed by smaller costs like fuel and tolls. This order is intended to help you prioritise your expenses and plan your budget more effectively.

Step 1: Choose your region.

This is the first step, as it sets the basic parameters for your trip, including the currency, units of measurement, and fuel prices. Select 🇬🇧 UK or 🇪🇺 EU at the top. The calculator then switches between miles/mpg and kilometres/L per 100 km, and swaps the currency symbol from £ to €.

Step 2: Set the duration of your trip, the party size, and the required accommodation.

You will need to estimate the number of nights you anticipate being away, as this will affect all the other variables. Next, slide the number of travellers and hotel rooms to reflect your group. The average hotel cost per night should be the rate for one room, not the total for the party.

Step 3: Set the daily food budget per person.

This will need to cover coffee stops, breakfast, lunch, visits to pastry shops and your evening meal and drink costs. Yes, you may want to have some budget-friendly days (e.g., enjoying local bakeries for breakfast and a picnic for lunch) and some splurge-worthy days (e.g., dining at Beefbar in Monaco), but you need to set an average budget for the week.

Step 4: Add crossings.

If the tour includes Dover>Calais or another sea link, add the channel crossings and the cost per crossing.

Step 5: Enter distance and fuel data.

Use Google Maps or a dedicated route planner to get your total mileage or kilometres. You can also check current pump prices for the countries you visit online, then slide the fuel cost per litre. The calculator prices fuel in pounds unless you are in EU mode, to keep things simple. Typically, the UK has some of the highest fuel prices compared to the Continent, so working with current UK prices is enough to get a good idea of your budget.

Finally, set your car's economy – either mpg (UK) or L/100 km (EU). It's pretty surprising just how little effect a lower MPG has on the overall cost of a trip.

Step 6: Add tolls.

Estimate how much of your planned distance will be on toll roads, then set the percentage of toll roads and the average toll per unit distance.

Your estimate.

The Estimate box updates automatically, showing a line-by-line breakdown and a total. When you're happy with the figures, tap 'Send this budget via email →' to receive a full summary directly in your inbox – this is helpful for sharing with co-drivers or keeping as a record, ensuring everyone is on the same page with the budget.
